This makes me so glad that I walk so much. Living in NYC, where few people have cars, we do a lot of walking. But people elsewhere should consider it, too.

More than 46,000 cancer cases in the United States might be prevented each year if almost all of us walked for about 45 minutes a day, according to an eye-opening new study of inactivity, exercise and malignancies. Most of us drive cars rather than walking a mile from the store (carrying groceries the whole way back), many of us have sit-down jobs, we buy our vegetables at the grocery store rather than growing them in the (ever-diminishing-in-size) backyard, and the same for meat... we are generally not out hunting all day for the night's dinner, unless you count checking apps to see where steak is on sale. Then we cook the food in the microwave or in the electric oven... we don't have to lug in wood and start a fire and keep it going. We load dishwashers rather than scrubbing dishes, turn on the tap rather than lugging water from a well, toss clothes in the washing machine rather than scrubbing laundry at the river, order from Amazon/Instacart/curbside pickup rather than traipsing through stores. We argue on message boards instead of walking to the neighbor's house and gossiping about all the news we heard from the other neighbors (in person).
We are more sedentary than ever, probably in the history of humankind. I find it interesting that someone would think the opposite. What's your reasoning?

It's hard to believe that only 3% of cancer is related to inactivity. It is known that inactivity increases the risk of chronic inflammation, diabetes 2, and obesity, and all of those increase the risk of cancer.
I doubt that improving their odds by 3% would motivate anyone to walk who doesn't like to. So this report will have the opposite of the intended effect, if it has any.

According to the link provided in the opening post, the study included 600,000 people which I assume were randomly selected to represent the U.S. population. And 2/3 of people in the U.S. population are either overweight or obese. So the majority of people in the study would have had weight issues, including young and old etc..
I believe that might help to explain why the result was only 3%.
The article also stated that another report in 2019 calculated that reductions could be as high as 69%.

More likely it's the cumulative effects of all lifestyle and diet factors. Walking is just one of those factors.
Walking could be the most important factor, for health in general. Either walking, or some other aerobic exercise that uses the large muscles.
Lack of exercise leads to insulin resistance and chronic inflammation, which often leads to metabolic syndrome, diabetes 2, and from there to cardiovascular disease (heart attacks or strokes), and to dementia and arthritis. And cancer.
So if someone walks 45 minutes, or more, every day, their risk of cancer should be dramatically reduced.
That article is very confusing, because reducing risk for only 3% of common cancers is not at all impressive, and not even worth reporting. It doesn't even say how much the risk is reduced. Just a bad article, I guess.
