WHO, the World Health Organization now classifies video game addiction as a disease.

https://en.royanews.tv/news/33530/2022-01-01

Video game addiction and/or excessive play is definitely an issue/addiction. But calling it a 'disease' might lead some to think it's a get out of jail free card ie they have less reason to take direct responsibility or control over their actions

........
Exaclty. 'those who lack discipline'

Using the word 'disease' not only brings third party insurance money into the equation it helps disguise the addict's lack of discipline, priority and will power along with their decisions. It also helps get a lot of parents off the hook for poor parentlng.

With excessive video game play people try to down play it as well because it's not a chemical substance but they do it for the same reasons addicts do-escape, the rush, buzz etc. Excessive video game is frequently associated with stimulant use as well.

Have nuisance neighbors frequently playing 24/7 literally starting game shortly after waking up going for the game controls like an alkie heads for a bottle. Their 'visitors' start playing in less than a minute after arriving. It's an issue/'addiction' but they are NOT diseased people. Being selfish, ignorant or a pos does not make one a diseased person.

Well...if we set the harsh judgment aside, we might come to understand how most addictions are fed by dopamine, and perhaps learn what we can do about that, preferably psychological help, which is why some addictions are in the dsm. Fighting your own brain's desire for chemical is much easier for some than others. Many people have other vulnerabilities, are not as strong, as those that easily walk away from addiction.

The problem then, is in the people who think it means they have an excuse to take responsibility for their actions.

The problem is not with the word.
