I've been saying this for a year or more. I think back-of-the-throat tests would be less unpleasant than up-the-nose, for one thing.
For Coronavirus Testing, the Nose May Not Always Be Best
As Omicron spreads, some experts are calling for a switch to saliva-based tests, which may detect infections days earlier than nasal swabs do.
"The virus shows up first in your mouth and throat,” Dr. Milton said. “That means that the approach we’re taking to testing has problems.” https://www.yahoo.com/news/coronavir...151926275.html
When my family got Covid earlier this month, we got a couple of rapid tests from my mother-in-law, who had stocked up before they disappeared from the shelves. My husband's was positive.
My daughter, who had mild symptoms, then took one using a nasal sample and it was negative. She said she shouldn't have taken it from her nose, but from her throat, and if she had it would have been positive. She then arranged to get a PCR test from her university and indeed, it was positive.
Then we tested my son, and again my daughter said--don't take a sample from his nose, take it from his throat. So we did, and his did come up positive.
I have the feeling that an oral test would be less unpleasant, and therefore something more people would be willing to try.
