I have a weird sensation on the right side of my face right where the nerve to the upper canine root would be. It is not a pain per se but like an electric current. It has been here for years. I also have a temporal headache on that side that really never subsides. The headache may be less painful than other days but it is ubiquitous.
I wonder if anyone out there has ever experienced this sensation. I have no dental issues.
Could be misaligned vertebrae. A trip to a well-respected chiropractor could help. Do some research. Absolutely avoid any notion of surgery. Good luck to you, hang in there.
Trigeminal neuralgia is usually excruciating pain along one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve. That's a cranial nerve, so it has absolutely nothing to do with your neck. Chiropracters won't help it at all except by their usual placebo effect.
Pain around the canine ("eye tooth") area is most likely due to local effects-- bad tooth or sinus irritation (infection or allergy). A bad tooth there will often irritate the sinus too (the bone separating the two is paper thin) so it may be hard to tell which came first- a chicken or egg? situation.
Pain in the sensitive facial area often causes reflex tightening of neck muscles which can lead to neck/shouolder pain &/or headaches.
Because your problem has been present for years and you give us the impression it's not terribley bad, it may be mild irritation/stimulation of the trigeminal nerve near the temperomadibular joint-- TMJ. That has many causes, like "teeth grinding" at night, dental malocclusion, anatomical irregularities, etc etc
Probably a good dental evaluation is the first order of business.
Sounds like you may need an MRI. Schedule and appointment with a neurologist. If you do not already have one get a referral from your primary care doc. The wait can be long to see a specialist so the sooner you get on this the sooner you will know and hopefully get some relief.
Do not go to a chiropractor.
Well I went to the doctor today and it is definitely trigeminal neuralgia. I will be starting carbamazepine (Tegretol.)
Anyone have any success with carbamazepine?
I used Carbamazepine briefly a few years ago but stopped due to side effects. Thereafter, I switched to lamotrigine (LMT) which worked better for me. I am still on LMT and have no discernible side effects.
Our pastor has this and he does describe the pain as an electric current that’s excruciating. He will be meeting with a specialist for his next steps. He is taking medicine but it just helps a little.
And why? All the they know are drugs, surgeries, more drugs, more surgeries. Rarely solving the problem. Daughter had TN and chiro solved it. I'd go that route before submitting my body over to medical quackery. Thank you.
