I was just at a drs office and was with a friend and asked her dr about fibromyalgia and he said he did not believe in it and it is just normal aches and pains that women have and they should stop complaining and get up off their butt and move more ...they hurt because they don't move and their joints get stiff and he said he has testified on medical records that the woman who wanted disability is just lazy I was so mad when I left there and im wondering if there are not more of these idiots out there who are drs and causing people to loose their disability claims ?

I've seen too many people (some in my own family) that claim they have this disease, because it can't be proved or disproved....just to get pain medication. It's becoming a huge problem.

Sure there are, doctors are just people you know, and they definitely make mistakes due to not keeping up with latest medical advances

This is why every person must be their own best advocate during a time of illness. NEVER give up seeking help when you know you are truly sick.

The AMA knows that fibromyalgia is "real" VM -- Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Fibromyalgia, Jan 2008 ... Virtual Mentor

Why not send that ignorant doctor a package of info to enlighten the uneducated fool?

Its not only this illness that gets igored so does Chronic Fatigue. and the illness I myself have MCS.. doctors pretend not to know or understand or think your attention seeking.. nothing could be further from the truth.

There is controversy over Fibromyalgia as there is with other illnesses. The AMA is not always right and medical opinion changes as new discoveries are made. Look at ADHD and autism- look at cholesterol and statins- that whole range of illness is open to interpretation.

Medicine is an art as well as a science and, for certain diagnoses, there is a wide range of possible opinion.

So, if you don't like your DR look for a new one but don't be so sure he's wrong. He might be proved right.

When I had fibromyalgia--and it is a real illness--I went to a fibro specialist. He knew what he was talking about and how to combat this illness. By following his treatment plan of physical therapy, I recovered. I was not trying to get disability, I was trying to get better.

It's doctors like the one who doesn't "believe" in an illness who are kind of useless. They ought to study and get up to speed.

It was a long time ago, but I think I looked on the internet. He was at a large Boston area hospital and he had so many patients that he only saw them in groups! Many of us were too weak to exercise (aerobic exercise everyday was the prescription) and we complained. But I went up to him afterwards and asked what to do if you were so weak and in too much pain. He said I could do the aerobic exercises in a heated pool. I did the exercises with a physical therapist who gave me simple floor exercises to do on the non pool days. It really did work.

Rheumatology - Newton-Wellesley Hospital - Greater Boston Area

This is the doctor I saw way back then--15 years ago now. They KNOW fibromyalgia exists and they don't say stupid things like its just some aches and pains. It is nothing like aches and pains. In most cases the person gets sick first, like a flu. As the flu goes away, you gradually start to ache all over. If you don't move, the aching isn't so bad but if you actually try to do something, you will be in severe pain later on. Be bedtime you feel like you've been run over by a truck. It's so painful you can't even turn over in bed. The pain will wear off in a few days as long as you don't move. Don't dare to try to do anything again or you'll have the pain right back again. It's very discouraging.

I remember suddenly being so weak I couldn't even lift a cup of tea! I had strained my body by moving out of our house--doing most of the heavy work myself. It did something to my muscles and there was the psychological stress at the same time. That's how it usually is. There's a lot to it, it's a complicated illness. If you ever end up with a doctor who has decided not to believe in it or who thinks it's "all in your mind" it's time to find another doctor.

My mother has it and the treatment has ruined her life. For 15 years, some quack has had her hopped up on ADD medication, heavy pain killers, and anti-depressants. She does nothing, can't think straight, is up all night, wanders aimlessley around stores, won't even prepare food for herself, is moody and mean at times, and has such horrible ADD that you often can't have a conversation with her.

She doesn't eat much and broke a hip at age 64 (I've heard the heavy pain meds can cause brittle bones). She spends most of her time trying to get sympathy for her FM and ADD, has no friends, and is the most difficult person I've ever had to deal with. She won't do anything physical AT ALL. Mostly, she just sits in a recliner, spaced out, watching QVC. She's basically a junkie and whatever quack keeps writing her prescriptions is her dealer.
