If you've been unfortunate to read other threads about pretenders to the throne, I think that the most dominate weapon in the history of small arms is and has been the AK-47. Designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, the AK-47 and its variants have been in service since 1949 and has been present on the battle field in virtually every conflict since its development. Today it is estimated that over 100 million AK-47's and variants have been built with some 10 million still in service, many dating back to 1947. The AK-47 has had such an impact on history that it has been a international symbol of revolutionary movements and even adorns the flag of Mozambique.

Before the AK47, insurgencies were equipped with inferior weapons or had to capture equivalent weapons from their adversaries. Thanks to Cold War proxy wars and the AK47, anti-colonial movements could actually field a weapon equivalent or even superior to their enemies.

It will take some time, but I think that the AK will gradually peter out just as the FAL did. The Chinese have dropped it in favor of their 5.8 mmm family, and the Russkies will eventually move to their AN-94 or something else. The few AK inspired designed adopted by Wesern nations, such as the Finn's Valmet, or the Israeli's Galil, are no longer issued.

the AK is the perfect rifle for third world countries, they dont need high tech rifles the AK will be around for a long time

all thats needed is a little motor oil & some gas or solvent, or nothing at all, AK's have been known to function after being buried for years

no special cleaning gear needed, just a old shoe string or pull through and a rag

The AK47 could not hit a van at 50 foot on automatic. Go to 1 min 35 secs:

Kalach was shifted over to 5.45 caliber back in 1974.
