Excluding those whose ancestors immigrated since then, of course. Many Yankees with Confederate ancestors or vice versa?
My earliest ancestor who set foot in what became this country got off the boat in 1635. During the Civil War era my ancestors were in Arkansas so if he had anything to do with the war they were probably Rebel-gray.

Mom's side to 1690 they were in Southern Missouri during the Civil War
Dad's side can't find anything past 1820, but was in Kentucky then, and Arkansas during the Civil War
it is difficult and time consuming to calculate, but i know i had roughly 50 or so ancestors who were alive during the US Civil war. I only know who a portion of those are: of those known, they were all living in SC at the time, and about 5 or 6 of them were Civil War soldiers.
i don't know if most Americans can say this or not. for whites in the rural american south it seems typical.
my relatives were here since late 1600-early 1700's in ohio during the civil war era......how about some reparations for the relatives my family lost freeing the slaves?....just a thought....
On my father's side I haven't been able to trace back any further than the late 1800s. On my mother's side, I was able to trace back to just after the Civil War. My last name isn't terribly common, but I have found several soldiers by that name on both sides of the Civil War. But I can't determine for sure if I am related to any of them.
on my fathers side, the family did not get here until just before world war l when my great grandfather had immigrated from greenland, long after they had left germany. i wish i could find the family bible as it is supposed to contain the family record back to 6th century germany.
on my mothers side of the family, the lineage has been traced back to the court of queen mary of scotland, and they immigrated in the 1700's through south carolina.

A thing to keep in mind is that a fair number of people fought for the side opposite that of their state. As an example Mark Twain was from Missouri which was a northern state, but for the short time he served in war it was a part of a Confederate home guard in Missouri. Similarly most of the elder members of the Hatfield and McCoy clans of feud fame who served in the wat did so as Confederate regulars or as members of a Confederate guerilla group (called the Logan Wildcats if I remember correctly) even though they were from the northern states of Kentucky and West Virginia. Meanwhile Gen. Winfield Scott who commanded the US Army at the start of the war was from Virginia which hurt him politically as people thought his prediction that the war would take years and subsequent plan to slowly strangle the Confederacy was a veiled effort to sabotage the war effort (as it turned out the US would more or less replicate his strategy by the end of the war).

I'm a Yankee with Confederate ancestors. Actually the family has always referred to me as a "half-breed". My father was from the North and my mother was from the South. My mom spent over 20 yrs. tracing the family tree. On her side of the family there were quite a few who fought for the Confederacy. There were even brothers who fought on opposite sides. We don't know much about my father's side of the family since his father was adopted in late 1890's. His father, my grandfather was gone before I was even born.
Wel I am a southern with yankeee ancestors as are many in the south. I can trace mine to long before that but easilyy the civil war. My wife is of southern ancestery and can even show you where soldiers camped on their property and her relative who live in the house where the commanding general stayed. That really isn't that long ago in history tho.
