The '70s was one of the latest starting decades in my opinion, relative to the calendar decade. When the calendar said 1970, the '60s world (hippy culture, Vietnam, LBJ/Nixon era, muscle/large cars) was still in full effect. I feel the cultural '70s started around 1973-1974, with disco rising in popularity, the OPEC gas crisis, Watergate and the Nixon resignation, and the numerous changes that all seemed to occur in this era. The "full fledged '70s" seemed to last from 1975-1980, with the '80s getting off to a delayed start as well with Reagan's election and the beginning of another economic expansion around 1981-1982.

What's your take on it?

Some people would say 1970-79. Others would say 1971-80. It depends on which end of the decade definition spectrum one resides on.

I agree and see what you are saying. Culturally, the very early 60s (I was born in 65) were much more like the 50s. The 60s were mid to late 60s but went well into the 70s. Vietnam Ended 1975? I was 10 years old, but I don't remember much about it. Had we just lost interest? Late 70s was Disco. I was an adolescent so that was big. So our decades aren't as clear cut as we think.

Culturally the 1970s lasted from Watergate to Reagan. Watergate was the last hurrah of the Great Protest Movements of the Screaming Sixties. The Hippies had won and now they had to get jobs and govern. It was a time of Growing Up when we realized we had to put away childish things and become Adults. Jimmy Carter was the perfect expression of that era: sort of bewildered at how the world actually worked. He was much ridiculed and made the scapegoat for everything that went wrong, but really, the guy was just faithfully doing what the Baby Boomers wanted done--and it didn't work. Then along came Reagan. We gave up the last of our childish dreams and became Adults. I traded in my youthful light beige suit for a more sober blue one and everybody else was doing the same thing as we bid Childhood fairwell.

I would say the Screaming Sixties began with the Beatles and ended with Watergate.

The Shifting Seventies were from Watergate to Reagan.

Not quite sure when the Fabulous Fifties began, but sometime in the late 1940s and the era was clearly dominated by Eisenhower--I like Ike.

Correct. The Beatles changed all that with British culture coming to the fore. The influence of British pop culture has been there ever since. What defined the 1970s? Awful flared pants. In the UK ithe decade was marked by a rapid rise in living standards.

My parents had one!

Y'know, I had to click on this post because I didn't understand what the title really meant. But at least clothing-wise, when I think of miniskirts, I think 60s, yet on Brady Bunch and other 70s shows and films, it shows minis being worn. I don't remember girls and women around me wearing them in that decade though. Earlier in the decade, my mother wore paisley maxi skirts w/matching midriff halter top. Through most of the 70s, I recall women wearing bell-bottom slacks most often, and teens wearing bell-bottom jeans. In the mid 70s, I recall the skirts being at knee length, A-line shape and often wrap style. So since I don't recall the minis in real life, I'd say they must've been early 70s, and maybe around '74 or so, the mod 60s stuff and hairstyles were largely no longer worn. But throughout the decade, I remember teen boys with long hair.

And I'd agree that the 70s feel ended with Reagan's election.
