What led to the Five Civilized tribes to adopt slavery?

This is from a few years back when some Cherokee Freedmen(Black slave descendants of the Cherokee)were trying to get recognized as members of the Cherokee.

How much did these tribes becoming mixed with whites lead to them adopting slavery and other parts of white culture of that time? In other words, were some of the Native American slave masters part white? So did they inherit slaves from their white side?

If memory serves several powerful Indian landowners were in fact of mixed heritage and inherited estates which included slaves, some of those slaves were also Natives or descendants thereof. People are not aware of it but during the early colonial times there were a lot of Natives enslaved by Europeans.

Traditions of Native American slavery Edit
Many Native American tribes practiced some form of slavery before the European introduction of African slavery into North America.[1]

Native American groups often enslaved war captives whom they primarily used for small-scale labor.[1] Others however, were used in ritual sacrifice,[1] usually involving torture as part of religious rites, and these sometimes involved ritual cannibalism.[2]

There were several differences between slavery as practiced in the pre-colonial era among Native Americans and slavery as practiced by Europeans after colonization. Whereas Europeans eventually came to look upon slaves of African descent as being racially inferior, Native Americans took slaves from other Native American groups, and therefore did not have the same racial ideology for their slavery. Native slaves could be looked down upon as ethnically inferior, however.[1] Another difference was that Native Americans did not buy and sell captives in the pre-colonial era, although they sometimes exchanged enslaved individuals with other tribes in peace gestures or in exchange for redeeming their own members.[1] In some cases, Native American slaves were allowed to live on the fringes of Native American society until they were slowly integrated into the tribe.[1] The word "slave" may not accurately apply to such captive people.[1]

Long story short, salvery ocurred/occurs everywhere.

You don't need white blood to be a slaver. Where did you get that idea?
American Indians were doing it to each other long before any white dude walked in.

It's not just a :white: thing or a :black: thing.
Blacks came with colonists some as slaves some as colonists and they all lived on Indian Land. That's 3 races in close proximity. Blacks mated with Indians, and Blacks mated with whites. And whites mated with Indians.

In fact often Indian tribes would take in runaway slaves, feed and clothe them and integrate them into their tribe and marry them.

It's that the majority of the people enslaving Blacks in the U.S were whites.

This is quickly leaving the OP's original question.

To the poster above, The "whites" were the ones in charge. Therefore they were the majority slave holders. That's how it was done in the old days. Those in power regardless of color enslaved those not in power. Like the Egyptians and Hebrew slaves, or in the 1640's-50's the English taking over 300,000 Irish as slaves sold to
Antigua and Montserrat. Or the Barbary pirates of Africa who raided European coastal towns capturing and selling men women and children on the North African slave market.
OP you have to answer that question for all cultures. They all did it. The "injuns" weren't immune from the lust of free labor.

Slavery is the default labor saving device for primitive cultures. You might notice that European and American slavery did not end until the industrial revolution. Before that it was just too handy to have someone else do the work.

That ^ is true but that was after Europeans discovered the Americas and brought black people with them as slaves.

Natives didn't adopt the practice of slavery from the whites, (they didn't need to adopt it, they already did it) although some of them may have taken advantage of the buying and selling aspect of the white man's slave practice.

All native tribes, ALL of the many hundreds of tribes throughout all of the Americas from the Arctic Ocean to the Antarctic Ocean had already been practicing one form or another of slavery for thousands of years before whites and blacks put in an appearance in the Americas.

Whites practiced racial slavery and discrimination but some of them also enslaved white people. Natives did not practice racial slavery or discrimination but some of them did observe tribal discrimination. To the natives a slave was just a slave, the natives weren't picky about what colour of skin a slave had or what continent he or she came from. Sometimes natives even adopted their slaves into their families, including adopting white people and black people into their tribes or families. And they didn't really differentiate between a white person and a black person and had no concept of race or racial differences. Some tribes simply referred to black people as "black coloured white men".
