Leave It To Beaver was set in Mayfield, Ohio - which is a real place. It's a suburb of Cleveland.

I was finishing high school and beginning college when LITB was running. Being from a working class family, in a largely working class town, I thought LITB occurred in outer space somewhere....its cutsie middle class suburban milieu had zero resonance with my reality.

Ditto for almost all those family sitcoms of that era.

Leave it to Beaver was set in the late 50's with the Cleaver family originally in one of the older (prewar) "street car" suburbs. The family later moved to a new development. In both instances they lived in a rather nice higher end example of each type. Most cities had these.

There was a great scene in the series "The Wire" where McNulty is driving Bubbles into a nice area of town:
Bubbles says: "Where in the Leave it to Beaver World are you taking me?"
---

The Wonder Years was set later in the 60's and into the early 70's with the family living in a far less "nice"
but still brand new tract home development more typical for that era. Too many cities had these.

The Dennis the Menace cartoon strip was basically built around Wichita, KS, the cartoonist's home town.

But, those neighborhoods like Leave it to Beaver never really existed. They were just fanciful images of some ideal place which wasn't real.

In which way didn't they really exist?

Beaver's mother would always vacuum the house while wearing a pearl necklace. His father always wore a suit and tie at home. When Beaver was still small, he could wander off and play all over town (while his dad played golf) and there never seemed to be any traffic on the quiet streets. And his dad got real upset when Beaver accidentally drilled a tiny hole in the garage door, which could easily be plugged up - what's the big deal ?

In one episode when Beaver was 13 or so, his parents wanted him to take a long bus tour of several weeks, all over the U.S.A., the national parks, and even to N.Y.C. by himself (but he stayed home to be with his girlfriend). WOW -- I can't imagine encouraging my 13 year old do such a thing - without even a cell phone if he got lost (which of course, wasn't invented yet).

The place you're looking for exist only in your head. BTW the same facade was used for Marcus Welby as well.

Mayfield was/is a real place, but Leave It To Beaver was essentially an idealized fantasy of suburbia for children to watch on TV.

Just like decades later, Sex And The City was an idealized fantasy of New York City for adults to watch on TV.
