ironing foil sometimes works, depending on what the gunk is.
If it gets too bad, I pick up another iron at the thrift store. My current one still has "$8" written on it in sharpie marker.

I believe the gunk came from ironing hemming tape onto a skirt (I should have used a towel on top!)

I actually have a travel iron (complete with a small water reservoir attachment for steaming) my mother received as a wedding gift. She was married around 1949. The iron and the steamer still work fine over 70 years later!

$8 for an iron? i got this for $30 on Amazon
I use parchment paper when ironing gunky stuff like hem tape. Nothing sticks!
I probably bought the iron on a sale day, so maybe $4. It's a good iron, with steam and spray, and looks pretty new.
Bread machine was $15, toaster oven about $10, coffee maker $8. I only buy appliances that look newish, and test before buying.
I've never found a working stand mixer at a thrift store, though I got a 1970s Sunbeam for $3 at a rummage sale. That was a sturdy beast!
You have to watch prices; they wanted $50 for a nice looking mixer, but when I tested it, it ground horribly. I later saw the same mixer new at Walmart for $55. I bought a new mixer, different brand, on Amazon.
We seem to move a lot, so I'm OK leaving them behind.
