If you are working on electronics, you need a power supply that will limit current and display current draw. However they are way more expensive.
In my shop I have 8 Rigol DP 832's Cant live without them. They run about $450. You can find them used from time to time for $250
This type of power supply is used by Amateur Radio operators to power sensitive receiver/transmitters. HRO has many different brands and models, from under $200 to over $1000.
Good luck in your search.
I know this is an old thread but try a power supply salvaged from an old computer I made one for my bench, you will have 12 5 3.3 and a -1 port. Look on YouTube for how to build. Can provide about .5amp before is shuts down.
I use this one for my projects and troubleshooting. Its not high dollar, I didnt need that. Just a decent 12 volt power source. This is a 10amp constant and 12amp surge. Shop around and get the functions you need. Seems to work ok for my needs.
