We are going to Freezeout Lake Montana today to see if the spectacle has begun yet. It may still be iced up but we will see. As soon as the ice melts the place will be crazy with snow geese making their first stop-over from a 600 to 700 mile long non stop flight. They will make one more stop-over in Canada before reaching the breeding grounds Wayyyy up there in tundraville ! I'll try to get some photos. Seagulls are already showing up and the pelicans wont be far behind. You can watch them breeding and hatching their babies on the island in Arod lake in the summer. Wear a hat or you'll get a doo doo shampoo !
Yes it has begun, Geese coming in waves, Freezeout lake is melting out in spots and the birds are putting on their annual show. Shore birds are showing up like crazy too. Bugs are hatching and It looks like spring to me. Now I have to get my fishing license.
How cool Rickers! The other day the wife and I were heading up to a friends ranch and saw about 1000+ canadians (geese) on the ground in a field of about 5 acres. Must have been a pit stop for them. Pretty cool (and messy) stuff.
I need my fishing license also. Might stop tomorrow and try my hand on the river this weekend.
The island on Arod lake will be completely covered with several types of gulls and white pelicans real soon. If you boat too close they fly over you and launch bombs ! If you want super close up pics you have to just about wear a raincoat or at least a wide brimmed hat ! They are real noisy when they're jockeying for nesting spots. I'm going to try to get close ups of baby pelicans if I can this year.
My new camera has a 20x optical zoom.
Here's what I'm talking about ! One of these links are to an article from Montana Outdoors (The official magazine of The Montana Department Of Fish Wildlife And Parks.) It describes the snow goose spectacle going on right now at Freezeout Lake. The other link is to another M.O. article about David Thompson. What a guy ! There are a lot of older articles on that site that are very well worth the time to read them.
