It came about from a family day out with the wife and kids at the ice skating rink. After a couple of hours on the rink I thought 'hey..this is good fun'. So I took up ice skating lessons (now just finishing my second term and building confidence) and am now thinking..'I might give hockey a go'. Not a big sport in NZ but they have a couple of teams in Christchurch and a masters grade. The games are non-contact so that takes a few of the hits out of it so easier on the body. Am I aiming for a big fall, or should I just get out there and give it bash. Any thoughts, advice? How well should I be able to skate before attempting?
Let me pose this question to you,,, when you are 56, will you look back on your past 10 years (a) with regret for not at least trying something such as this, having fun and learning, or (b) with joy for the knowledge that you played it safe, didn't let your passion and heart lead you down some silly path that is just filled with falls?
Go for it!! No check hockey can be pretty easy on the body actually. There are groups of graybeards out there playing who are in the 60's and 70's. I used to occassionally play pickup with a group outside of DC who called themselves the Gerihatricks. They may not have been fast but most of them could move the puck really well and were very smart players. It's a sport you can keep playing for a long time, easier on the knees and hips than field sports.
No! I've been playing competitive ice hockey/ inline hockey since I was a little kid (Im in my late 20's now) and have played in beer leagues with guys in their 50's. Typically in beer leagues they will divide players according to skill level....in some of the less skilled leagues you have plenty of guys who just took up the sport in their 40's or 50's. This is common. Go for it! You will have the time of your life and make tons of new friends!

Sure, just have some patience with it. I admire those that take it up as an adult since it might be frustrating playing against folks who started out when they were under 18.
Thanks guys for the support. Ive already paid up for another term of ice skating lessons so aiming to give ice hockey a shot in the term beginning July. Will let you know how I go later in the year.
If I could skate, (and could afford to take lessons!), I so would. I used to play street hockey with my friends as a kid, (I usually was the goalie) and always had a blast.
