Are they just being slapped on an otherwise plain, drywall finished house with little or no other structural details showing? Then yes. If not cheesy, certainly a weak attempt at architectural detailing.

There should be a consistent and honest theme to a houses detailing- exterior and interior, and just adding things because "they looked good" in a photograph or another building generally isn't the answer towards establishing or adding to one.

Personally, I don't like imitation stuff. Lot's of people don't mind though.

On the other hand, real wooden beams that are fake holding up the ceiling are far preferable to plastic beams made to look like wood that are fake holding up the ceiling if you get my meaning.

In the right style of house - it won't matter if they're fake or not, because they'll look genuine because they'll "fit".

That could range from a great room in a Tudor, to a Spanish (old!) style to even a more contemporary mediterranean look.

Even a very old looking colonial could pull it off.

A 1950's ranch?? Not so much - unless of course a lot of other modifications have taken place.

We have a newer fauxlonial - eventually we'd like to do a coffered ceiling in the Family Room. It will be 100% "fake" - but the architectural style of the house is traditional enough to pull it off, and by then we'll have the other details taken care of (crown molding in public rooms, chair molding, high base trim, etc..) so the coffered ceiling will look appropriate.

If you already have an older look, I think you can probably pull it off. One thing though, make sure you have high enough ceilings. 8' is not that high really (with a lot people being 6' or taller) and adding beams may lower the ceiling to the point that it starts to feel cramped.
