For instance a jungle painting where you want a lush effect...
Really? And you think silk plants are tacky? I admit, I am envisioning a velvet painting here; but that's all I can think of when I hear jungle painting. Something that you could purchase along with a feather adorned roach clip or a tie dyed t-shirt at a carnival.

How a flat object could stand in for a 3 dimensional one is totally beyond me.....
ROFL on the roach clip comment!!!
I prefer real plants but I have cats. They like to eat them or poo in them. One time I bought a huge floor plant, spent some time picking out just the right pot, set it up and was so pleased with how it looked in the room. The next day I smelled something. I smelled something really bad! It was driving me crazy I pulled out the sofa, looked under the sofa but couldn't find anything. It took me a day or two to realize my cat was pooping in the plant! I tried moth balls and that seemed to work for a while but when the plant finally died I didn't get another.
So all that being said I have one fake plant in my house. Its a bonsai tree my grandmother had bought many years ago. When she passed away I asked to have it. It is very real looking, so much so I get tons of compliments on how I am able to keep this bonsai tree so healthy. he he he. I saw a few fake plants at Pier One that looked good. I might get another if I find one that looks decent. My biggest pet peeve is people letting them get dusty. Really I think fake flowers probably look worse than fake plants.
I dislike fake plants too but I have a couple of PRESERVED EUCALYPTUS plants that I do enjoy. I bought them on the internet 5-6 years ago and they still look as fresh today as they did when I first got them.
I don't think even purists would argue about a preserved plant. It's still a thing of nature.
One possibility that no one has mentioned is that if you have a decent garden, you can always keep a couple of arrangments of flowers or foliage going.

Now that's not bad, but it makes me feel like I'm falling forward.
