Hi I'm studying interior design but I want to eventually work as in films designing sets, my question is does anybody know what is the path to go down to become a set designer? I've been looking around and I can't find a straight forward answer.... thanks!
It's called 'technical theater- set design' and is a speciality within a theater dept degree. It is far more than decorating though. It not only involves design and play analysis but carpentry, band saws, specialty painting, ladders, and carrying heavy things around for the most part. Other classes you may have to take as a supplement might be theater electrician and sound engineering. It is a good way to make industry contacts though which are vital.
I greatly admire the creativity of set designers but wonder how steadily they are employed.
