What would you do with this landing? How to decorate it?

Artwork and some small but tall things in the corners - vase, plant, etc.

I second what Flamingo said. Large artwork, something off to the side - vase, corner three tier shelf, etc.

Minimal/code compliant "Switchback" landings are disasters waiting to happen. They lend no additional space for "stuff"- especially when you're carrying "stuff"!

A large piece of wall art- and make sure its hung a little on the high side so you don't brush against it when traversing the stairs. it's even more awkward when two people are trying to pass each other.

I'd certainly paint it a lighter color to take away the 'cave effect'. I agree with some sort of art. But you have to be careful because as mentioned, when you're carrying something up or down you could bump it. Some sort of wall mural.

One big piece of art that you love but can’t fit anywhere else, and not much else.

Or, a grouping of family pics. Keep the grouping tight; use both big and small photos. And very little else.

Ask yourself what you want to see on that wall every time you go up and down the stairs.

As previously mentioned I agree something that you can hang out of the way of passing traffic. Maybe a tapestry if that fits in the style of your home.

I would not put any furniture or plants, either. I agree they would end up in the way. I agree with the idea of a large piece of art. I love the tapestry idea or just a large canvas. For instance:

I love these repelling guys for fun:

Both of the above came from this website:

Instead of art, consider hanging a long textile. Look for interesting weavings at ethnic import shops. You can find colorful handwoven textiles roughly the size of a small bedspread, in shops dealing with imported crafts from Africa and Asia.

Another idea is to hang several pieces of art at different heights, descending diagonally down the back wall, left to right. Choose pieces to frame that have similar color palettes.
