I'm about to rent a new place, and as usual apartments have white walls. How do people manage that? The fingerprints and browning from dirt would drive me nuts. I'm going to take the hit and paint a bit. I know it's $$$ and gotta deal with landlords, but my view is I wake up and sleep and live in the home every day, spending a little and some negotiation for a living space that I experience day-to-day is worth it. But which walls to add some pop and life to an apartment?
Here's a link to the floorplan: New Apartment. It's one of those apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows, and an industrial ceiling in the living room/den (rather than a typical white wall ceiling).
Anyway I'd love some suggestions or views from more experienced folks--
Bathroom - doorway (see the color reflected through the mirror) or the wall over vanities/sink/toilet wall or both?
Should walls around windows generally be painted?
Verdict on accenting the wall around the apartment front door/entrance?
Is it better if the TV is in front of an accent wall or to just leave that white? (I'd hate to stare at dirt/scuff marks though)
Also wondering as a stylistic thing, why is it that generally you're better off painting just one wall in a room or all walls in a room--but trying to split the difference usually looks off?
The first thing you gotta do is get permission from your landlord. Some will allow you to paint, some will allow you to paint as long as you repaint the walls their original color when you move out, some will not allow painting at all.
I really can't blame the ones who do not allow it; not every Joe Tenant can be trusted not to spill paint all over the place or even do a semi-decent paint job.
My advice is to invest in some cleaning supplies. Walls painted other than white get dirty, too.

How do you get finger prints and stains off of white walls? IME I've found other colors, even neutrals like grey and biege much more manageable.
Well, darker paints in small places will make them seem smaller. Also a multitude of different colors will make a small area seem chopped up and smaller. Light colors (not stark white) and monocolors will make the small place seem larger.
On the other hand a small place with darker colors and several shades (not like a checkerboard, but subtle) can give a ”rich” or ”cozy” feel. Your choice.

There are paints that wash just fine, no matter what color they are. It’s about that.

It's a bit of both. I like accent walls and/or adding a color theme to my rooms. But also I find white walls tend to get unsightly with finger prints and smudges. At least in most rentals.

There is such a thing as flat enamel. It looks nice and is very washable.
