I contacted Direct Buy to check whether they have a store in North Carolina, but they don't have any here. They sent me an invitation to visit the nearest one in Chesapeake, Virginia which is 3+ hours drive from my place. I am not sure is it really worth going that far to check furniture. Can some one please share their buying experience with Direct Buy? How much is the membership?
Consumer Reports had an article about it on their site a while back. People continue to make comments on the blog there: With DirectBuy, it will cost you a lot to save: Consumer Reports Home & Garden Blog
Most of the comments are negative. But a coworker used them a couple years ago to furnish a huge custom house with very upper-end furnishings and they said they thought it was a good deal. As I recall they paid about $5000 to join.
I beg of you NOT to get raped....oops I mean ripped off. Just google Direct Buy complaints and there are over 100,000 hits. If you want to part with $5000 I will personally drive to your home and install whatever it is you want to buy from those criminals.
Everytime the subject comes up on here it gets several hundred posts beefore dieing.
DONT DO IT !!!!
What is it you want to buy? Tell me cabinets.
You live in North Carolina, the furniture capital of the world and you want to travel to Chesapeake? People in Virgina and beyond rent Ryder trucks to travel to NC just to furnish their house.
Direct Buy are RIP OFFS!!!
This is not my opinion or anyones opinion. This is a fact. In due time the Dept of Consumer Affairs will manage to shut them down and hopefully they will find enough money to give everyone their $5000.00 membership dues back.
if you are only buying a couple of things, direct buy is not for you. we did join, many years ago, 22, when we bought our house. it worked out for us. we bought appliances, furniture, window blinds, kids bedroom furniture etc. it was great. I wouldn't do it for a couch!
I also did some research online and found that membership fees are too high. I want to buy furniture for entire home and exploring different options. Direct buy was also one of them but I am not ready to drive 3 hours and pay $5000 for membership. I started a different thread in High Point forum and got very good idea about furniture stores in that area.

I considered it, but I want to be able to see what a place like that has to offer and compare to what I can get on my own. Their tactics rub me the wrong way; from what I understand you have to make a decision right then and there, and can't take notes to take home under the guise that it's proprietary information.
If you're in NC check out Furniture Land South, it's absolutely massive and has everything you could want, plus they constantly run specials for free shipping and everything else. I live outside of Charlotte, so it's about an hour drive for me to get to their location, but their prices are always on the lower end compared to other places I have visited in NC.
I'm pretty sure for at least the rest of April they have free shipping anyplace East of the Mississippi.
