I recently purchased a V6 2008 Honda Accord Sedan. Wanted a coupe but didn't want to wait three months. Anyhow, I've only been getting 23.5 to 24 mpg. I thought the new accords with the variable cylinder usage were to get closer to 30 mpg. I drive 80 miles a day, with 65 being highway (at 70 mpg) very little start/stop. Has any one else seen this or do I have a lemon. I've tried with 10% ETOH and pure gasoline. Only seems I get about 0.5-1 mpg more w pure gas (87 octane). I also seem to get another 1 mpg if I use 89 octane.

All in all I really like the car, but I thought the mileage would be a touch better.

A new car will get lower gas milage initially until the engine is broken in which is usually in the 5K to 10K range.

We own a 2007 V6 with VCM and it is the hybrid model. If we hyper mile it, the mpg meter will go to 38 or 39 on the highway for its max and the low will be 22 to 23 city also hyper miling it. On a trip 300 plus mile trip a few weeks back, I averaged 34 mpg for the whole trip. My SO on the other hand has a lead foot and is luck to get 30 highway and 20 city. I have noticed that with the VCM engine the trick is to keep it below the fives (45, 55, 65 etc ) driving at 33, 43 or 53 or so in the designated zones seems to keep the car geared to be in econo mode. Take off slowy from lights and stop signs and anticipate red lights and stop signs and take your foot off the gas and coast in. It only takes a few seconds longer to get where you are going and you save fuel, pollute less, longer brake life and greater duration between oil changes ( if you go by your maintenance minder and wait till it reachs 10% oil life instead of the standard 3500 miles).

If you are getting 1MPG better on mid-grade, if you can find some high-test with no alcohol, try that. Although it costs a little more per gallon, you may find you get enough better MPG that it's actually cheaper to run.

Trlhiker is right, the MPG will improve as the car breaks in. One of the best ways to determine if a car is fully broken in is when the MPG quits improving.

If it's a stickshift try shifting up a little sooner than you currently do, and push the gas down a little more. Don't get carried away with this and lug the engine, particularly not a new engine. BMW did some research back in the '80s on economy and found that "most people" would do better to shift up sooner and accelerate at the same rate, but in a higher gear (reduces throttling losses).

Well going 70 will hurt you. Every 5 mph over 60 you're paying .20 more for gas.

My mom has the 4 cylinder 2008 Accord and she gets about 29mpg. She's about 4,000-5,000 miles into it. I have a 2005 Saturn Ion and I get about 27-28 and it costs me less to fill up. She pretty much takes the highway to work (15 mile round trip) and the grocery store isn't too far from the house. She gets about 450 on a 18 gallon tank (I think that's how many gallons she said it takes to fill up). Hopefully she'll see an improvement. I told her she should have gotten a Prius or a Honda Civic hybrid but she didn't want to listen.

Not necessarily. Some cars do better at lower speeds, typically less aerodynamic ones. OP's Honda will probably do almost as well at 70 as at the Greenie's 55.

Prius is at it's best in stop-and-go traffic, freeway cruising the hybrid system essentially does nothing.

I would say 29MPG for a 2008 Accord is pretty decent since it's a larger car. It's only rated at 30 highway for the auto/4cyl.

You need to watch the tach. You want to be closer to 2000 rpm than 2500 rpm. Now if you have a V6 I'm not sure what the range is, but the lower the better. On my car going from about 65 to 75 results in about 25% greater rpm, ~25% greater fuel consumption.
