Best to leave doors open and registers open. Otherwise, you're affecting the airflow in the heating system and potentially creating higher back pressure. This makes the blower/fan work harder.

How would you know if this was true or not? I have a 100 year old cottage with the furnace room next to the dining room in the center of the house. The dining room is warm enough and doesn't need heat at all, so I close that vent completely. I purposely shut that vent so that more air is forced into the further distanced rooms on either end of the house.

There is no way to answer OP's question without a great deal more information, which was not provided.

The answer to this question depends on a lot of unknowns and quirks to the house in question.

Forced hot air heating? Hydronic? Steam? Electric? How many zones? etc etc.
