Help, I have a disaster on my hands. We have light carpet in the living room and dining area. I made a cake this evening and left the can of chocolate frosting on the counter. My 5-year-old daughter took it and started eating it with a spoon, which I didn't mind. Before I knew it though, she was taking globs of frosting out of it with her hands and smearing the soles of her feet with it and walked all over the dining area. She wiped her hands on the dining chairs and walls. So I had handprints all over the walls and chairs and chocolate footprints all over the carpet. I left everything as it was in order to give her a bath, had to wipe up the entire bathroom afterwards, and by the time I got back to the carpet, most of the frosting had dried up. I managed to get the chocolate off the walls and chairs just by wiping with a wet paper towel then spraying oxyclean on the chairs. I tried the same with the carpet and got the chocolate out of a lot of spots but ended up with rust-like discoloration where the chocolate had been. I have a little green machine ad was using that to wet the carpet and suck out the dirty water. I sprayed oxyclean on it but it didn't help at all. Searching online only gives me very time-consuming methods or asks for items I don't have at hand. If anyone has any experience taking out chocolate stains, please advise.

Uh oh! Kids are messy little creatures; good thing they're cute.

The Carpet & Rug Institute's spot removal guidelines can be found here. For chocolate, they recommend that you act quickly and not let it dry (too late for that, I know). After that, test your spot removal agent, use a white cloth (so you can see if any of the chocolate is coming up), and then keep at it as long as you're getting lifting of the spot. Don't scrub!

Good luck!

Worst case scenario, hire a carpet cleaning company to come in and take care of it. Having worked in a lot of rentals and flip houses, I've noticed that those guys can get just about any stain out.
