My grandparents have one in s. california. they have a long winding driveway and it lets them know when someone passes thru the invisible "beam". It's hidden in a fake mailbox.

It not really paranoia it more for safety or let you know you might want to throw some pants on as you are about to have company.
My grandmother has one and her front door is a considerable distance from the end of the driveway.
The buzzer let her know someone is about to walk up her sidewalk and she can decide if she wants to answer the door or in the middle night to grab the smith & Wesson.

I think the driveway alarm is a great idea, as mentioned, to prevent getting caught with your pants down...! We live in a gated community, so any surprise visitors have to call from the gate, otherwise I would have one. Our security alarm is set to give two quick chimes any time any door or window is opened, when the alarm is not set.. A great feature if you have small children, but also nice just to know when your spouse is going in and out of the house.
If someone rings my bell and I'm not expctiong anyone, I don't answer the door, not out of fear, I just don't want to be bothered.....
We have one at the entrance to our driveway which is about 500 feet from the house. Chimes when a car comes through the gate. Great feature. We love it. Gives you just enough time to throw something on.
We have a very long driveway and we have the Driveway Patrol from First Alert. Cost about 15.00 on line. Works great. However the first night we jumped out of bed b/c the deer set it off. We originally bought another model at Home Depot but it was too sensitive. Kept going off with the wind so we returned it.
