An item known by various terms. In the parlance of my family a "geegaw" or "gimcrack" comes to mind. A personal favorite is "curio." So named, according to my long dead father, because "After you buy it, you're curious why you did."
This reminds me of something that was in a house we rented years ago. The house was built in 1926. In the closet was a wooden, cylindrical cagelike thing that was mounted but could rotate. There was no obvious way you would put anything into the cage, either (i.e., a door). We only lived there a year and never figured out what it was.

It looks like it should sit flat on the ground next to a fire place. Possibly for kindling wood, or news papers.
