It's a puzzle. I searched google images. No luck. Should be interesting to hear people's ideas.

Is it wrought iron or plastic coated metal? Does it open somehow?

Wrought iron & doesn't open. I passed it up at a local thrift store and went back but it was gone. Wish I had bought it .

It is a towel holder.

Possibly a wall basket for plants, but if so it is hanging upside down. The wide opening should go on the top.

The construction is odd though, so a hanging towel holder "drying rack" could be a possibility.

Probably a derivative of some New Orleans lacework wrought iron, but constructed with steel rod instead of real wrought iron.

An item known by various terms. In the parlance of my family a "geegaw" or "gimcrack" comes to mind. A personal favorite is "curio." So named, according to my long dead father, because "After you buy it, you're curious why you did."

This reminds me of something that was in a house we rented years ago. The house was built in 1926. In the closet was a wooden, cylindrical cagelike thing that was mounted but could rotate. There was no obvious way you would put anything into the cage, either (i.e., a door). We only lived there a year and never figured out what it was.

It looks like it should sit flat on the ground next to a fire place. Possibly for kindling wood, or news papers.
