I would never, ever, buy a house where some blue haired pearl wearin woman, or sandel wearing with black socks, pants hiked up to his nipples man can tell me what I can or cannot do to my house.
I have never seen anyone who benefits from an HOA except tthe lawyers.
Just my humble opinion. I'll take a breath now. oooommmmmmmm. calm.

We live in an HOA community, love it, and have for years, everyone else around us has too and we all get along and enjoy our community. Everyone has a copy of the CC&R's and has no problem with them. We do not have any individuals as described in the above post.
Today it is almost impossible to live in a planned community without an HOA. Most cities/counties require it, at least in in our areas.
Luckily, this is a buyer's market and there are many, many nice homes available in lovely neighborhoods that do not have an HOA, for those of us who would prefer that kind of setup.
And for those who want an HOA, more power to you! Buy one with an HOA and enjoy.
I have lived in my home for 7 years with an HOA. Everything about it is great. Most of the people who complain have no experience with HOA's.
I have a condo I rent that has an HOA. Never had a problem with them. I imagine there are bad ones, I have no complaints...

I agree with this statement. Our street, that has protective covenants but no HOA, is surrounded by streets with HOA's - I know many of these people and they consider their HOA's protection and moved here because they want standards of cleanliness and upkeep in their neighborhood. I see nothing wrong with that - it is a matter of CHOICE to move to a neighborhood with an HOA - if you don't like HOA's, there are plenty of places that you can move where there are no HOA's.
Life is full of enforced rules, laws and standards of behavior - HOA's are just a version of the same idea. They are considered a good thing my many of us.
Lived in townhouse community with HOA for 11 years...NEVER AGAIN! The board members must have been descended from Gustapo soldiers! You had to have flowers approved by board in your window boxes, holiday decorations limited to white lights on small porch only, white curtains on external side, and everything you brought up to the board to possibly enhance the neighborhood was met with "we'll look into it" but never heard from again.
Probably the most annoying was their inability to have enough funds in eschrow so there were constant $1,000 to $5,000 assessments.
No and NEVER. Around here HOA are not common except in townhome developments. They make sense there because the HOA owns the buildings and you need (by law) someone to oversee those. For a regular residential neighborhood, no WAY would I live in one that has a HOA.

Same here.
My neighborhood is all single family homes.
Most of the nightmares I hear about involve condos/townhouses.
