My grandfather in Puerto Rico is buying a new gate opener, since the one he has now is over 20 years old. We went to a dealer today, and it appears the model they recommend is the LiftMaster MJ. Going to the LiftMaster website, it appears that the MJ is actually designed as a commercial jackshaft garage door opener. The one sold at the dealer appears to be attached to a box with a gear assembly that somehow "converts" it into slide a gate opener. Interestingly, they also had a model for smaller gates made from a LiftMaster 3255 residential chain drive garage door opener.
I was wondering, has anyone seen such gate openers before? I presume they are common in Puerto Rico.
Yes, they are common for gates on rails (not swinging). They work very much like a garage door. There are a few variations, but, you should be able to find some examples by googling " automatic gate opener with garage door opener" or something like that. Liftmaster will probably be of some assistance in choosing the right equipment. The gate, the rail system, and the grade near the gate opening are some variables to consider.
Not just PR but basically any warm weather climate -- Hawaii, FL, ranches in SoCal or Texas. The other climates need a more "all weather system" and other use hydraulic ram-rod driven system or other means to deal with the potential for ice and such.
Try googling "Keith G. Vickers plans for gate opener" to understand what is needed to take an "off the shelf" Genie garage door picker upper and use for a gate opener...

Of course, the one my grandfather bought was made from a commercial-grade jackshaft garage door opener (the LiftMaster MJ).
