We were told just glass cleaner by the people that installed our counter tops. They are about 15 years old and still look great, except for the chips. We have never sealed them. Sometimes I just wash them with dish soap.
Our granite guy advised using Glass Plus, never Windex due to the ammonia in it. Day-to-day just a damp paper towel but a few times a week a gentle rub-down with the Glass Plus does the trick!
I use the granite gold cleaner, polisher, and conditioner. It is a bit expensive since they are three separate products, but it is probably the best way to keep your countertops cleaned and sealed. Why don't you check out some more reviews: Best Granite Cleaner | The Top 3 Products to Clean Granite
I use a 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle. It doesn't damage the sealer and leaves a beautiful shine. I've been using this mixture for 15 years with no problems.
For years I've used alcohol and ammonia mixed with water (25%,25%,50%).
I agree also that most stone tops do not require sealing. I don't recall seeing anything sold as granite that was of a reactive or porous type of rock. The recommendation usually comes from a play it safe mentality on the part of the retail vendor or installer - they don't care whether it's going to help or not, the motivation is to be absolved of any responsibility.
The easiest and best way to clean granite is to buy a daily stone cleaner. Not stonesoap, but just a neutral, daily cleaner formulated for stone. Do not use any ammonia, vinegar, or lemon cleaners on granite.

Mine look fine and they are at least 14 years old. No chips in mine so far. I sealed them a couple of times years ago, with whatever-it-is that they sell at Home Depot. But, I haven't sealed them in at least four years and they look great. I cut fruits and vegetables on them, although I really don't cut meat on them for some reason. I usually just clean them off with a plastic tuffee and water, or glass cleaner when I think of it.
