It happens all the time. Its been going on for like 2 years.
Well, if you think it's a problem that you can't live with, you could trap and relocate (which is what I would do - and what I did when I had one getting into my chicken coop).
I'm sure there will be others who will suggest more lethal methods, but the way I figure it, unless it is being deliberately destructive, that skunk has as much right to live its life as you do.
Are you near water? Like a creek? If so, you will likely always have this problem. Get rid of one skunk and there will probably be many more to take its place.
You can do a few basic things, like make sure you don't leave cat or dog food or other sources of food out, but if your neighbors don't also take those precautions, it probably won't make much difference.
Have you checked around the foundation to see if a skunk has been getting in under your house or maybe a deck or porch?
Wildlife is nice until it sprays your dog right in the face and then the dog comes running into the house.
We have tons of animals come through our property here (skunks, possum, deer, foxes, a coyote, snapping turtles plus the usual furry woodland rodents). When the skunks move in and have babies under your house, which happened to my next-door neighbor last year, it's time to call a "critter-getter" wildlife removal specialist to trap and remove them.
You definitely don't want the skunk to spray your outdoor compressor and draw the odor all throughout your house.
