I pay for gas to get hot water and heat for my apartment. Should I be worried about having a black plastic bag rubbing against the boiler? is it going to get hot and possibly start a fire? thank you

its current temperature is fine with it, should I expect it to get hotter at various points in the day?

Why is there a black plastic bag there in the first place? Fire danger is always a possibility.

I have something stored in a black plastic leaf bag leaning up against it, it is completely cool currently, I just want to know if the temperature of the boiler will be heating up at random points in the day/night or it will continue to be fine forever, thank you

Your black plastic bag is most likely combustible.
You always leave at least a few inches of clearance between a hot water heater and something combustible.

My advice: Move the bag.

Lets use a little common sense here-
If it was worth your time to write the question then obviously there is a bit of concern on your part.

So, when in doubt why ask such a question? Especially since you feel concern and know there is a possibility that something could be wrong with this scenario.

Yes, asking questions is a poor idea. The whole basis of philosophy is flawed.

I don't think having things near an electric water heater is a big deal, but it's a big deal for a gas water heater. If the water heater has it's own closet, then the only thing meant to be in there is the water heater. If it's on a shelf above your dryer, then the only thing meant to be on the shelf is the water heater.

And asking the question is not a big problem...better to ask than to start a fire, especially in an apartment where your actions affect everyone in the building.

Gas water heaters need air and ventilation. Best to leave some space around them.

The BEST advice will come from reading the WARNINGS on the water heater and in the instructions which come with the water heater when purchased. If you do not have the instructions for your water heater, here is another...

http://products.geappliances.com/Mar...GAS%20FVIR.pdf

Note: I found the above by searching google.com for...

pdf gas water heater

(Instruction manuals are in pdf form, so including pdf in the search brings up instruction manuals.)

P.S. It is good to ask questions! Smart people ask questions. They get smart by learning from the questions they ask...
