I have extremely dated, old embossed linoleum in my kitchen area. I plan to lay vinyl over it. These tiles are from the 80s and each is individually glued down---very well, I might add. There's no way I'd even attempt to get all of these things up as it's a large area. They are in surprisingly good shape; they just look awful. Anyway, I'm going to lay vinyl on top.

My understanding is that since these tiles are embossed, I'm going to have to level the floor first. I'll also be doing this alone. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Depending on what you use to go over will determine options.

Armstrong had various products for this back when I was doing a lot of my own work...

Also the heavy inlaid floor like Designer Solarian had great coverage to hide things and prevent from telegraphing through.

There is one method that works for just about everything... new underlayment with will add about 1/4 to the floor height.

Many floors were done this way....
