We discovered a leak today in our water shutoff valve at the house and to turn off the water at the meter. The leak isn't real bad, so the city folks told us we could turn the water back on periodically for showers and such then turn it back off. I forgot the water was off and flushed a downstairs toilet. I remembered it was off, so I decided to turn in back on briefly so I could flush an upstairs toilet and rinse off some dishes. The downstairs toilet filled, no problem, when I turned the water back on. I went upstairs and flushed the toilet and as soon as I did there was a loud bang from the toilet. I check everything afterwards and it seems alright. I turned on the water downstairs to rinse the dishes and everything worked fine. Any idea what the loud bang might have been.

Mr. Hanky committing suicide?

Does the toilet have a pressure tank in it? If so, it could have been compressed air releasing.

No, regular toilet. Has a fancy shut off valve, no ball ****. I was thinking since the water had been off for about 5 hours and I flushed the downstairs toilet, I might have pulled air into the lines.

Air in the lines is a given. The bang is from a shutoff or from waterhammer. The only question is whether or not the valve was damaged. I doubt it, but when you get water back, flush a few times before going to bed for the night.

After the repair, expect crud in the line. When water is first restored, run an outside hose pipe to drain the first ten or twenty gallons of water. Otherwise the crud can end up in mixer valves and faucet screens.

Will do. Thanks very much for the advice. We have a plumber coming on Monday to fix the outside leak. Hopefully he will take care of all that.
