You may want to take note that slate is a sedimentary rock which means that there is an element of layering and softness that may not endure hard use.
You may want to read this before you make up your mind.

Slate floors, while beautiful, require diligent maintenance to avoid unsightly dirt build-up and potential scratches.

Any dish or cup you drop will break. I am not a fan of stone/tile kitchen floors myself. But I don't like carpet in the kitchen either. Various vinyl type flooring is popular at least in part because it's practical for a working kitchen, assuming yours is such.

Slate is KILLER slippery if any oil/water gets on it. If you do choose it, seal it and have an anti-slip coating applied.

Slate is metamorphic, not sedimentary; it's quite hard. It's porous, so it'll stain. Personally I'd stick with porcelain, easier to clean and no staining. But lots of people use slate.

We had slate floors in our former house. They looked great clean, but when they were dirty they showed every little speck of dirt. I liked them, but would not choose them again due to maintenance.

We put in a slate floor in the bathroom at our old house. We LOVED it. Never had a problem with it so we decided to put in a slate floor in our bathroom in this house. Since the bathroom is right over the porch, we opted to put in a floor heater under the slate. We will probably put in a slate floor with the heater in the downstairs bathroom whenever we can redo that room (Maybe next year unless I win the lottery).

What is really nice is that the slate is "locally grown." It was quarried LITERALLY down the road. In fact, when we bought it, they gave us a discount on it because we are local. Can't beat that.

I love slate, but recently put a tile floor in my entranceway that looks like slate. It is maintenance-free and more durable than slate (apparently). I love it and wish I had also put it in my kitchen and half bath.
