It's been a few months since I redid my deck. I need to either stain it or paint it or something. I think a few people make a "coating" of some sort made for decks. Is that the best to use?

It's just a basic wooden deck made with treated deck boards. I assume I still need to clean the deck. It hasn't had anything applied to it.

I think my wife wants it to be a certain color, not just the natural wood color. I'll let her figure out what color she wants.

What are my options?

I have spec'd TWP for years- it has been THE proven product for many years (I maybe changing my recommendation to TWP within the year after I see the long term report on a rather new product which is seeing favorable results so far).
What generally makes one type of stain/sealer better than others is its penetration rate- the better/deeper the penetration, the better the protection and color retention. A lot of the cheaper products on the market are "film" type sealers- they tend to crack and peel.

I second K'ledgeBldr's recommendation. There are a lot of inferior products out there. One note - the odor when working with many of these products can be overpowering. If you do it yourself, consider a respirator mask and avoid the heat of a hot sunny day.

I will check out the TWP and see what colors the wife likes.

Thanks

Go with TWP. I used it for our last two wood decks and they held up tremendously and look attractive. I would NOT paint a deck! It's hard to get off once you do and when it starts to fail (which it will)..yuck.

Do not paint a deck...

I'm not sure what a good brand of Wood Deck Stain and Preservative is, but cheaper is usually not better. Read some reviews in Consumer Reports to see what their test results have been.

I am wood deck free, went concrete, after having them in FL, MD, and PA. They don't do well in New Mexico.

For sure, do NOT paint the deck. For some dumb reason, my late H painted the deck of our last house. It faded in the sun, peeled from the rain, and the dogs really did a number on it. Bad choice all around!

Thanks. Definately only considering TWP 100 as of now. Just got to pick out a color. Also, I need to calculate how much I'll need. I know it's hard to guess but is one coat typically enough? Again, this is ~3 month old wood and still looks great.

Also, is getting it from the above link the best cost or do others sell it? IOW are there local retailers that might carry this?

I wish I had known about the TWP stuff. I did a huge deck with Sikkens and even though it was expensive and highly recommended by the owner of local lumber yard the results were disappointing. I will have to file this away in my memory banks for future reference!
