We moved into our new house 13 months ago and this weekend my wife just pointed this out to me in our utility room. I hadn't noticed it before, but it's possible that I did and simply hadn't paid attention to it or made a note of it. I sent photos to a woman who works for the builder and handles repair claims, and she thinks it's welding grease from when the water heater/pipes were being put in.

My concern is that it's water leaking from a pipe somewhere behind the drywall and that that's mold. What do you guys think it is? Water damage / mold or welding grease?

Mold is usually white or black. That sure looks like grease splatter to me. But I'm no expert.

It's the right color and in the right place for it to be soldering flux grease. It's used when sweating the copper piping together. It would need to be cleaned as best as possible, then oil based primed to seal it off, then painted with whatever the final finish paint is.

Definitely not mold, but soldering paste splatter as others mentioned. Sand prime paint to cover it.

Thanks guys. I feel so relieved now. I was afraid that some pipe from an upper level was dripping behind the drywall and that there was all sorts of damage and mold behind it.
