I have two windows that need replacing. I'd like to know what to call them when I am researching bids. The first one is a window that is really just a glass opening. It doesn't open or close. It's just built in to let light in. A glass pane totally enclosed by a wood frame. About 2" x 5". Second is the same but sort of a porthole configuration in the master closet. (About 2" x 2" pentagon shaped.) Doesn't open or close either. What are these called and how do I describe them to potential installers.
Also, if I do replace them (they are both double paned and have developed "fog" between the panes), will there be damage to the inside and outside frames?
Depending on the way they were constructed will detrimine the degree of replacement. Your best route is to have a glass company or window company come and look at them.
Hopefully, you'll only need to replace the "sash".
If the OP knows the BRAND of the existing window and the SIZE it is often far more cost effective to NOT call "a window company" but rather a firm that will merely replace the SEALED UNIT that has failed. Especially for "fixed lite" units the "window companies " will upsell a far more involved and UNNECESSARY removal of the whole frame of the window whereas a glass replacement firm will use the correct "sealed unit" to replace the failed double-glazed pane sub-assembly with the correct type of OEM or aftermarket replacement.
Search on local firms that offer "double glazed sealed unit replacement", these are often places that do not spend any money advertising as they tend to serve in-the-know commercial clients as well as smart landlords. In contrast "replacement window companies" prey on the gullibility of consumers who often spend far more on inferior products....
That's great info. I don't know the brand of the window. House was built in 1984 and I bought it in 1993. I will Google "glass replacement" for my area and see what comes up.
Thanks for the advice!
