Call a pest company and have them place traps in attic, who knows maybe on the roof. But don't put poison in the attic as you don't want them to go and pass away in the walls. Make sure all trees are trimmed away from the roofs, as they like to climb.

Look for holes in the eaves or near the gutters that can serve as entry points. If you find any, immediatly stuff them with steel wool and then get them permanently sealed.

If you have any fruit trees on your property, that's a prime food source.

No, real rats. It seems to be something restricted to California. Friends and family there all have their stories about roof rats as well as rats hanging out in trees.

Sometimes you will see date palms in California with a metal band around the trunk. I was told this is to prevent rats from ascending up the tree.

I just had to look it up. Apparently is a species of rat, distinct from the standard Norway rat, that likes roofs.

I knew someone in calif. who had some type of moutain lion climb a tree and get into her attic to have kittens. I would hate to be the pest control guy with the Have-a-Heart trap climbing up into THAT attic!!!

LOL! That's different...

Doing a little reading, it seems they are not restricted to California, although they are partial to warmer climates.

Has any kid ever climbed a tree and ended up eye to eye with a roof rat?
