We have hardie board. The key to it, as KB and others will attest, is that it MUST be installed according to manufacturer instructions TO THE LETTER. Cementous siding is awesome compared to vinyl or some other products.

Hardi cementious lap board siding is probably the most widely used siding material in the country. There are different installation techniques depending on what part of the country you're in.

Cultured stone is a fair and inexpensive alternative to real stone- however, difference is in performance. Real stone obviously will last millennias. Cultured will probably last the lifetime of the house. And yes, it does tend to fade a bit but not an appreciated amount.

As with both, installation is key to longevity- and in most cases, warranties.

Our house is like 98% Hardie siding where it is not brick, and it has held up extremely well for 15 years, EXCEPT for around our garage at the very bottom. The back and sides of the garage are 4x8 sheets. We've hit it with the lawnmower many times and it does break apart if hit too hard. I need to run a 4" wide strip along the whole bottom of our garage to cover up the damage when I finally paint it maybe this year.

If you look at all of the engineered fake stone products that have been used over the years, they all tend to look bad over time. I'd avoid it if you plan on keeping the house for a while.
