Well that is a very good question and I reckon you could see alot of different responses as its very subjective. It is further complicated that contemporary and modern can mean the same thing and sellers often use the two interchangably.

Paraphrasing from some people I know, "Contemporary" means "of today" or "current fashion." Its new, built or designed within the recent past.

"Modern" is more of a style- clean lines, minimalism, Japanese or Scandinavian (particularly Danish) influences. Art Deco, Bauhaus and Mid Century were three modern forms of the past.
