Our air conditioner is 10 years old and I think it works just fine. However, lately my guy has been saying it is so loud and the new ones will save us so much more money because it will be a lot more efficient.

Will getting a new air conditioner really have that much of a difference versus our 10 year old one? Would it be worth it, or is he just trying to spend our money on something unneccesary?

I agree. Hold onto the one you have, unless the noise drives you up the wall. I wish I could remember the brand of one made decades ago which is still running well! Be sure to clean your filters often.

The newer units will cost less to run.
However, if yours is running OK, let it go until it quits.
Unless you have a lot of disposable income, then go for it.

Default The real reason he wants a new one..............

Those old ones are heavy. Like it takes three men and a boy to get one into the window.

Apparently you will not help much, maybe not even doing the boy part of the work. The new ones are lighter for the same rating. Maybe quieter, probably more efficient. They might not last as long.

Actually could try to sell the old one, see if you can get the differential between the old one and a new one within reason, especially if you get it on a good sale.

The big question then is which three men and what boy is going to help carry the old one out to the car of the new owner? Those ladies never want any part of that bargain no matter which of the three men or boy they belong too.

I'd get a new one. I have a 15 year old 7000 btu that still works okay, but the new smaller 5200 btu I bought is much quieter and gets the same size room much cooler.

Is this for a window unit?

Anyways 10 year old system, lets say it's 8-9 SEER, if replaced by the minimum today would use approximately 1/3 less energy to do the same thing. If you had an 8 SEER system and replaced it with a 16 SEER would use 1/2. 9 SEER being replaced by a 18 SEER would also achieve the same capacity with 1/2 the power. See the correlation. New units are quieter and they achieve that by more aggressive fan angles along with a slower motor. Also they're insulated better and use quieter compressors.

If these are window units, if it's practical, keep the old one but put a new one in a different window. The old one stays as an "installed spare", you run it occasionally to keep the system in good shape.

Get your "guy" to help pay for it...

No, this is not a window unit. This is a big one that sits outside on the ground.

We don't have a lot of disposable income.. which is why I am asking is it really worth it. Apparently he thinks we are just going to pull money out of our butts or something, who knows, darn men
