I noticed this little fellow hanging upside down and the next day the caterpillar made his cocoon. Does anyone know how long they stay like this?

I used my iphone.

Looks like a monarch butterfly chrysilis. I just looked it up the other day because I had the little guys on my milkweed. Do you have milkweed?

I have never seen one like that. Neat colors.

When I was a kid, I kept a fuzzy pod-like cocoon in a plastic aquarium and in a few days I had an enormous moth with spots on it's wings. Not sure what you have there, but it looks fascinating.

Yup, definitely a Monarch.

The butterfly will emerge in about 12 days.

Their annual migration is a thing of wonder. Read up on it, truly amazing.

I had 31 of Monarch chrysalis' around my fireplace a couple of weeks ago! It was so exciting to watch them emerge. They will eat every leaf off the milkweed plant, get nice and fat and then head up to turn into the chrysalis and later, the Monarch. Watch for Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV), black death if it turns an ugly black color and takes too long to emerge. This can effect humans also. Read more info here:

Why does a Monarch caterpillar or chrysalis turn black? -
