Historic Deal Struck for Performing Arts Center in Sugar Land

Who:
City of Sugar Land Mayor James Thompson, City Manager Allen Bogard and Director of Economic Development Regina Morales will join ACE Theatrical Group Chairman Allen Becker and President and Chief Executive Officer David Anderson to announce a deal to construct a 6,500-seat live entertainment venue in Sugar Land.

What:
Following approval of a development agreement with ACE, the Sugar Land Development Corporation is expected to approve a design agreement on Sept. 3 with Martinez & Johnson Architects for the final design of Sugar Land’s future performing arts venue.

Renderings will be released on Sept. 4.

Construction of the region’s first 6,500-seat live entertainment venue is expected to begin in 2014 and take about 24 months. The venue will be located on a portion of 38.5 acres of City-own property in the Telfair commercial district, southeast of U.S. Highway 59 and University Boulevard. Development in this area is slated for commercial, office and entertainment purposes.

When:
Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m.

Where:
Sugar Land City Hall, 2700 Town Center Blvd. North

It would be really hard to find anyone in the Woodlands who isn't happy about this.

I'm happy about this. It is such a pain in the neck to drive up to the Woodlands for concerts. Prohibitively so, in fact.

And the Woodlands won't have any trouble at all continuing to sell out their shows after this new venue is open in Sugar Land.

Hopefully FBISD will start having their graduations at the new Sugar Land Venue, instead of the Toyota Center. At the Toyota Center, you are dealing with the drive, traffic, parking fees plus one must always keep in mind if the Rockets are in the play offs. Then you run the risk of the graduation being postponed. Not a great plan if you have friends and family coming in from out of town.

I'm sure they you're right. But it will be nice to have the opportunity to see concerts that don't require an hour plus drive each way.

Yep, I'm a lot closer to the CWMP and it'll be nice to see concerts that don't require dealing with people driving in and parking from those areas.

Sugar Land has been for sometime and will continue to be a city of its own. Good for them.
