I'm 23 and am an occupational therapist graduate looking for a job. Along with phoenix I'm considering Houston. What is the weather like here? What is the night life like for young singles? what is the medical field like here? Is there outdoor recreation. Also how is the shopping and dining in the region. Lastly how are the beaches around Houston for Recreation. I'm considering Houston because of better opportunities. Please tell me how you like living in Houston. Thanks.

Does anyone do their own research anymore? Like any of it? Even just a tiny bit? If only there was something that had all sorts of information available with just the entry of a few words.

Weather: Houston is a sub tropical climate. Very hot and humid in the Summers (essentially May-end of Sept). Expect temps in the 90s and humidity nearly the same. Not as hot or arid like Phoenix.

Night Life: It is my understanding that Houston is a very good city for singles in general, and has a vibrant night life. Can't comment on Phoenix.

Medical Field: Houston is home of the Texas Medical Center, which is the largest and most well known Medical Center in the Country, with several leading institutions and Academic Medical Centers. All of the larger Health Systems (Memorial Hermann, Methodist) have smaller satellite hospitals around the metro area. Houston beats Phoenix (and anywhere else) hands down on this comparison.

Recreation and Beaches: Houston is a pretty flat and spead out place that is lacking in what many would consider natural beauty. The decent weather make being outside much of the year possible though (except daytime in Summers), so that offers a lot. Galveston and its beaches are a 30-60 minute drive away depending on where you are. They are "Meh" in terms of beaches, but not so bad as many people make them out to be. Also several Lakes nearby. Phoenix, needless to say, doesn't have Beaches, but they do have a surprisingly large number of people who own boats and go to Lakes, which really surprised me when I was there. I personally think Phoenix, and especially points slightly North, are beautiful and much nicer than Houston in that regard, but not all would agree.

Shopping and Food: outstanding restaurants that offer a wide array of cuisines. Good shopping.

Overall, 2 good metro areas to consider. Good luck!

Hi! Houston has grown into a larger city but I still think the people here are the friendliest. I have not had that same experience in Phoenix

I am from Maryland (Baltimore Co.) but have been in Houston 10 years. The shopping and food scene here are phenomenal. However, I miss crab cakes and steamed crabs. But everything else more than makes up for it. It is hotter here for longer than in MD. So it will be hot through October. No real fall to speak of. The upside to this was temps in the 70s this week instead of the 30s and snow in MD. I prefer our weather. When I go back to MD in the winter, I seriously cannot take the cold. Our beaches aren't the same as OCMD. Then again, you can visit year round. That is good. Good medical opportunities here...very good. I never want to move back to MD. No regrets! Good luck!

Slight correction--largest medical center in the World.
