We could still have it. Part of it on land, and another part over water as a suspension bridge.

I look at Galveston Bay and I think of all the little islands, rivers, and coasts that Houston could have possible been built on.

I look at that map too and imagine if Houston would have been built on the beachless bay coast, it would be pretty stinky. Imagine Galveston Bay's muddy brown water, throw in wayy more pollution, and that's the sight you see from the skyscrapers. Yuck. Imagine a really nasty San Diego.

When I think about a bridge of some sort, I also think about what happened to highway 87.

Well, then you have to think of other places like Philadelphia or even New Orleans who made it work. All cities that sit right by the water have a certain stench to them.

They 'made it work' in New Orleans? Sustainability is not an issue for making it work?

But yeah, even SF with all the wind has a little stink on it, by the water anyway.

Not that way, lol. Just that they have a downtown on the water.

Then again, New Orleans is still here. Downtown is still there. Even through Katrina they're still getting back on their feet with tons of yuppies jumping on their bandwagon.

No city has more soul and heart than NOLA.

Again, I stand behind my opinion that if Houston were situated upon the bay, it (the bay, etc) would be stinkier than it already is:

Can traffic in Houston be as bad as in LA? From what I have seen, yes. I have watched bumper to bumper traffic on I-45 going into the bay around 5:30PM - 6:30PM. Think again if you are moving to this city to escape LA traffic.

Houston public libraries now have Valueline available online. This is awesome because people now have timely access to this valuable reference tool. LA public libraries still use the book version. And I used to think y'all do things backward here.
