So I'm moving to Houston soon and I was looking at rents and they seemed a little too high. Being that I can afford putting a down payment on a house, I'm looking at purchasing a house rather than renting. I was approved by my bank for a mortgage of $325k; however, I set my budget for around $250k (prefer less). I did some research and I found a few homes in CANYON GATE AT PARK LAKES that fit my budget, it's located in Humble, TX just off the 8 beltway. I'm not very familiar with Houston and my research hasn't been the most fruitful, what do you folks think of that area and the home values there. Also what good areas can I find a home that fits my budget?

Thank you very much for your help

Where will you be working? You have to understand that Houston is very spread out. If you buy somewhere and your commute is really long, you will probably not be happy. Houston traffic is the pits especially during rush hour.

Highly recommend that you rent for 6 months or a year to familiarize yourself with Houston. Houston is very spread out and different parts of the city have very different vibes. Humble is 20 miles from Houston and it can take an hour to get there in heavy traffic.

I'll be working in Downtown Houston. Traffic shouldn't be that big of an issues as I'll be working in a trading desks (5am-2pm) so I'll avoid most of the traffic. I personally just don't want to waste my money renting and I'd rather have that go into building some equity.

That is not a bad area at all. I drove by there all the time when my daughter was in soccer since a big soccer complex is just north of there. It has a lot of nice, newer construction around there and the commute times to downtown even during rush hour are very reasonable. One of the best commutes right now. I have several co-workers that live up there in Fall Creek and the Kingwood area and they really like it.

You think the value of the properties there will appreciate it? Especially in the Canyon Gate community?

^^This. Anytime I have moved somewhere new, I rented or stayed in temporary or extended stayhotels for a month or two before making a choice on settling in. Its a pain to live out of suitcases but I haven't had regrets on my purchases.

Houston is big, make sure you know where you will be working before you buy.

Trader...starter townhome on the East side. That's what I would do...if single.
