Last month I talked to a guy that worked in rigs for a few years, he's about 5'-5" and 120lbs
He said that is not hard work, because of all the safety regulations that are in place

Its similar but LA has become way more concentrated. It's not as spread out as Houston. It does remind me of NYC in a lot of areas. No where in Houston does it remind me of NYC

that and no feeder roads. the suburbs of woodland hills/thousand oaks kind of reminded me of a woodlands/1960 (minus the terrain of course)

To you, it may not be, but to others it may be. To each its own.

Got that right! I was raised in Texas, graduated from college in Texas and this is second time around living in Houston. Between the high rent, overpriced houses, traffic, heat, humidity, lack of public transportation, poor quality of life, lack of outdoor activities (outside of going to a big park with a lot of other people), bigotry, narrow minds and rude drivers I truly don't understand the appeal in living here other than work. People simply exist here and live to work. How many people do you see with a big smile on their face in the grocery stores, malls or just in general? I see a lot of glum, unhappy people stuck with house payment, hefty car payments, credit card bills, etc. to appear to have it "all."

I miss working with people who actually enjoy their lives and come in Monday refreshed with tales of adventuresome weekends. Driving beat up jeeps, 4 wheel drives, wearing old keens but enjoying the hell out of life. Ah, but Houston is the best place to live in the entire world don't y'all know.

P.S. Yes, I am working on my exit plan. I refuse to just exist. Life is too short.

The only thing I hated about Houston (even though I do love the city) was the point people bring up here, that outside of work you're just existing. Houston is WAY too much a practical city sometimes and it shows in the keepin up with the joneses, the activities being mainly shopping, drinking and eating out. The one upside to all that is that you form (in my opinion) better long lasting relationships with people. It's a very social town because you practically have to be social in a city where all the main activities involve meeting other people. I do miss that. I felt LA, NYC and Boston (all places I've lived or visited extensively) were fragmented and cliquish. Sure there's way more to do and you can find a spark of life there but the social scene always seemed lacking and lonely.

Houston's character is a lot like its people; just practical minded. Maybe transplants aren't happy but most Houstonians are pretty ok with their lives.

Lol, where'd you used to live? I def try to make the best of it here but I Prob could've written almost exactly what you did. Went to the grocery store the other day and also share those same thoughts. People love Livin to work but most don't even realize it being unusual.

Rents will level off though.

They don't realize it because the culture is very practical and rather traditional in that sense. They think it's just a part of life. If you're not in career, in a home, married and with at least a kid then you're not doing life right. Any other way is just living an immature slacker life. So Houston can be in some ways a 'live to work' kinda town. Your job pretty much defines you.
