I am looking to start a support group for parents, family members, or friends of individuals affected by some one in there life who is on the Autism Spectrum. I have searched high and low for a group here in Houston that meets routinely, shares information and ideas, and supports one another to my liking. I feel as though we as parents tend to become isolated because our child is autistic or is on the autism spectrum. I know each path along this journey is unique and it would be helpful to have a support group in which to share what has worked and hasn't worked for you and your family.

A little about myself. I am a father of two amazing kids. My daughter will be 3 in April and my son is just 2 months old. We first noticed issues in my daughters development a few months after our daughter's 2nd birthday. After several months of trying to figure out what may be wrong and a marked regression in her speech and social interaction we decided to have our daughter evaluated by ECI when she was a little over 2 1/2 years only. They saw delays across the board and mentioned they saw autistic characteristics. From that point it has been nothing but a roller coaster to say the least; from navigating through insurances, to figuring out what therapies work and what don't, to being forced to become an expert in a field that you had only basic knowledge of in the first place.

I am open to how this support group transforms and becomes all that I ask is everyone interested in being part of the group come in with a non-judgmental and accepting approach. I look forward to this taking off and becoming a group for all those affected both directly and indirectly to be part of.

There is a meetup group that is quite large and people go to what they can.

Houston Autism Resources & Support (HARS) (Houston, TX) - Meetup

If you live in Pearland or Alvin, there is a support group of parents here that meets once a month. Jeanna is a great resource and her phone number is on the website.

Pearland Autism Connection - Home

Katy has an autism support group as well.
