Well, doggone it, I thought I saw enough of this crap in the med center, but I see the trend is spreading.

7 oak trees, approximately 30-40 years old, cut down. Not uprooted and relocated, but cut DOWN. Gotta tell ya, the more I see this, the more I get P.O.'ed about it.

If you don't know the area to which I am referring, it is the median and along the sides of Gessner, just south of I-10, in front of Memorial City Mall.

I suppose they'll just throw some of those date palms in their place, eh? Grrrrrrreeeat.

That was one of the things I loved about living in Houston is the older areas with the big beautiful trees. I just don't get why on earth they would just chop them down unless they were severely diseased or something. I know it would cost a bundle to move them, but I can't imagine just getting rid of them. Heck I would give anything to have a big ole tree in our little Dallas suburb.

Ah! Houston needs to stop this! I always feel like because we're such a new city, our respect for old things is lacking...

Oak trees are pretty sad and creepy looking trees. I'm sure the developer will replace them with something younger and livelier, unless pipes need to go under them

Sad and creepy??? What planet are you from that oak trees are not grand and majestic shade-providers? A mature oak produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year, far more than something "livelier." That same mature oak tree will absorb about 11 tons of carbon dioxide over its lifetime (ditto on the livelier thing). Given the state of Houston's air quality and the unrelenting heat in the summer, it seems almost criminal to chop down such an efficient carbon dioxide-absorbing oxygenator.

Red, Wysiwyg is from NYC. I don't think he understands the oak tree-Houston relationship. Sad but true.

I agree that it does seem criminal. Especially if they replace it with date palms. I love date palms, but not as much as I love the canopy of a beautiful live oak tree.

The Texas & Southern Live Oaks are great. They are evergreen for one (with a bit of shedding). I'll bet if there were more century old Live Oaks here you wouldn't refer to them as sad or creepy.

10 trees in the wrong spot cut down, 300 trees planted on the sides of the highways, medians, exit ramps, and whatchumacall those big ditches that collect flood water ('houston parks'). hundreds more planted and aging in vacant prime real estate lots (that are not selling), 1-2 more trees planted for each house that goes up. get over it, theyre still creepy even for that majestic (LOL) siesta time shade tree crap.
BTW you dont get bird crap under a palm tree
