Also look at older apartment complexes in the Westheimer corridor toward Westchase. Stay close to Westheimer, or north of it. A reasonable commute to your job, very diverse population, and while not pristine, not dangerous either.

Another good choice. There are nice apts in Westchase a little past Eldridge and the energy corridor. Pretty reasonable, pretty safe. Access to the beltway.

It's just me right now, so I don't need a whole lot of space.

Your job would pretty much be considered part of the city center. I live in Pearland which would be a little over 20 miles from my home to that area. During rush hour, or morning traffic, it would take me about an hour and 15 minutes.

Before coming, save up another few hundred so you can take a CHL class and purchase a good handgun. You will need it in most areas where apts are under $800 per month.

Now Park at Voss offers a 475 sq ft studio from 700-830...and a first month 300 off the rent for a 6 month lease. You have Kroger, Walgreens and Westheimer road within 500 feet..This will be your safest and economical option for now..

I just found out that I won't be moving until October. Hopefully, I'll be able to stretch the budget by then. Thanks for all of your help you all. I'm kinda glad I have a bit more time to prepare now.

That's sounds like the best thing. Raising your budget gets you into much newer, safer, and better apartments. Good luck!

I wouldn't take any sort of job offer if my housing budget is that low. I need to be comfortable to make a cross country move and having a measly budget would have me staying put.

That goes for anyone. We get people moving with their family of 3 kids wanting a $100k large house

Moving from home is bad enough. Your new home should be comfortable to ease the transiton. Moving cross country to live in a matchbox in sketchy city? Hell no.

But I imagine the OP is single svd ambitious. The thing I like about Houston is that if you're ambitious and hard working nothing seems too out of reach. You could start in a matchbox and be in a home or at least a nicer apt quicker than in other cities. Do some of you just not get this concept of working your way up? Are you guys that frightened by working class hoods? They're not all dangerous.
