or even the City of Houston? Do you really need to know someone who is already working at these places in order to get your foot in the door? Thank you.

No, you don't have to know anyone (it doesn't hurt though to have good references), but you do have to be prepared to wait. It takes HR what might seem like a long time to run apps through the system to get to the person, in the section, of the division, of the department, of the county, that it needs to get to. You also need to follow their instructions on filling out the forms precisely. One thing that might get you a step ahead is to find out who is charge of the position you are applying for and contact them and let them know to be expecting your application.

I submitted for two jobs both 30 days ago, I don't want to bother HR since I know the process just takes a while in general, but both my applications under the "application status", went from "application submitted" to "departmental review". What's the next step? Will they call from this point if they want an interview once all my background information is verfied? Any insight on the application process and how long it normally takes to here from HR Poltracker? thanks for the help.

Jobs I've gooten in the private sector have taken 6 months from application to start. Lately they are doing a lot more background checks which adds time.

Honestly no telling at this point. With all the hiring freezes (very limited "open" positions), I'm surprised you got that far. All I can say is good luck at whatever you are after.

I wouldn't say a Freeze since my husband applied for an IT job and got a phone interview but just wasn't chosen. It did take him several months to get an interview, luckily he has a job elsewhere.

I'm still looking for an administrative position, or something to that degree, I have my BS in management and I'll be out of the service honorably in August. Just looking to secure a job before August if I can. Anyone know anyone one else hiring a smart, hard working, Veteran? Thanks and I did apply for one position through Harris County Elnina , thanks for the help everyone.

County or the city does not get back to you for a long time. They keep you hanging and if they do really have an open position (and not just collecting applications) they reach out to you fairly quickly. Max 3 months. If you don't hear from them in about three months know that they are just collecting applications and those positions aren't really open. Its just a tactic to collect application.
